Weddings can wait as job fears grip couples

The credit crunch is forcing many young couples to delay their marriages until after the Lunar New Year or to seek cheaper wedding receptions.

Hong Kong Wedding Management Association chairwoman Angel Kwong Hung said yesterday that the number of young couples forfeiting their deposits for wedding receptions had risen by 30 percent when compared with last year. And if the financial gloom persists, she said, the figure could reach 40 percent, or around 10,000 couples.

"Couples are delaying getting married before the Lunar New Year as they fear being laid off before then," Kwong said.

Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades president Simon Wong Ka-wo said the closing of restaurants as a result of the financial gloom was putting an additional strain on couples.

"Many restaurants closed down last month, and the outlook for next year is not good," he said. "Couples who plan to hold their wedding banquets in smaller restaurants fear they could close before the ceremony is held."

A Consumer Council spokesman urged couples to protect themselves by entering into agreements whereby they will have deposits refunded if the restaurants fail to live up to their obligations.

Kwong also said more couples had reduced wedding budgets, with the current price tag between HK$180,000 and HK$220,000 compared with HK$200,000-HK$250,000 last year.

Yet Pink Wedding director Conway Lau said his company was receiving more clients than before.

"Amid the crisis, couples need someone to guide them on how to spend money and in a more economical way," he said. "Hence, we have received more business in recent months."

Lau also said suppliers of wedding decorations had cut prices to attract more customers, while wedding gown companies had reduced rentals by up to 20 percent.

Oath Celebrant Service executive Michael Lai Yiu said couples wanting quality weddings would stick to expensive plans, though the majority now wanted more economical celebrations.
